We would like to welcome you to the 55th anniversary of the GV-SOLAS and the 17th IGTP Training 2017 in Cologne. In Cologne, the Max Planck Institute and the Cluster of Excellence CECAD of the University of Cologne are the focus of research on age research. How can test animals help to investigate the causes of the aging process and successfully treat age-associated diseases such as cancer, diabetes, stroke or neurodegenerative diseases? These translational approaches to the topic of age research will be a major focus of the GV-Tagung 2017.
The current developments in the field of targeted genetic modifications suggest that the spectrum of genetically modified test animals, which are partly contaminated, will increase and the test animal customer will face new challenges. Originally restricted to a few species, such genetic changes are now possible in a variety of organisms with a reasonable time and methodological effort. The conference is also intended to provide a platform for an exchange of ideas in this area.
An integral part of our conference in the form of seminars and workshops is, of course, also classical experimental subjects such as veterinary medicine, nutrition, hygiene management, the application of the 3R principle, new developments and the practical implementation of the animal welfare law and animal welfare test animal regulations.
The ever-controversial discussion about the necessity of using test animals in research continues to have a high social relevance. We want to help with this meeting, to support the acceptance of animal experiments by scientifically founded justifications and to provide understandable answers.
I am looking forward to a stimulating congress and to welcome you in the cathedral city of Cologne with its 2000 years of history.
